Keystone Fund is a factory of exponential impact projects:

We detonate strategic businesses by turning great problems into global-scale opportunities.

WHAT WE DO

We orchestrate solutions to problems that are fundamental to a future Earth inhabited by 10 billion people, in which technology and humans coexist in synergy with Nature.

We take part in projects that have massive impact and that require the generation of high environmental, social and financial value.

We are interested in projects for which it is difficult and crucial to align stakeholder interests, and for which this can be done by means of synergistic systems.

HOW WE DO IT

READ, DESIGN, ORCHESTRATE.

  1. We see the problem from up close and from far away in order to understand the system that contains it.

  2. We design interventions that benefit the system and that redefine the problem as a new opportunity.

  3. We detonate impact through the creation of ad hoc high-performance teams and consortiums that align stakeholders and create synergies among them.

OUR EXPERIENCE

Since 2015 in our company, Keystone (Proyectos Keystone, S.C.) we have worked on consulting projects around the key problems for very large cities of water, urban development and transportation:

2015, West Rivers

In 2015, we designed a process for increasing the supply of water to Mexico City by repairing the rivers west of the city. We thereafter obtained the largest water private concession in the history of Mexico City, and our NGO has been operating a pilot project for regenerating two rivers to produce treated water for Mexico City.

2015-2016, Tarango

Consulting on a net-positive-impact business strategy for developing 400 hectares of land in Mexico City, including legal strategy, sustainability strategy and innovative transportation solutions.

2016, Xochimilco Regeneration

In collaboration with Rebuild by Design and 100 Resilient Cities who are funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, we designed for the Government of Mexico City the plan for the environmental and social regeneration of Xochimilco, a key UNESCO World Heritage Site for Mexico encompassing the famous “floating gardens” traditional agriculture system in continuous operation for at least 1000 years. This project included developing, with the Mexico City Secretariat of the Environment (SEDEMA), Fundacion Mexicana para el Desarrollo Rural and others, a private initiative for a site to spearhead the regeneration of the ecology, traditional agriculture and sustainable tourism in Xochimilco.

2017-2018, Tacubaya REIT

For the Government of Mexico City and a group of private investors, we developed a plan and executed the key negotiations for the legal, financial, real estate and social guidelines to regenerate and re-densify the key central neighborhood of Tacubaya in Mexico City.

2017-2018, Xochimilco Water Plan

In association with the Dutch company Deltares, we were contracted by the Government of Mexico City to develop a plan for restoring the water system of the wetlands of the south of Mexico City. This area has been occupied by the Xochimilco “floating gardens” for over 1000 years and it is the source of one-third of Mexico City’s potable water.

2018-2019, Forestry Platform

IT platform to integrate the value chain of sustainable forestry in the Yucatan Peninsula through blockchain and other technologies.

2018-2019, Calakmul City for Tren Maya

Right before the new Federal Government of Mexico took power, they recruited Keystone as a consultant for the Tren Maya project in the Yucatán Peninsula. Our main work with the Federal Government was to develop the design guidelines for the first of up to 10 new sustainable cities to be designed and built as part of the Tren Maya project.

2017-2019, PRT: SkyTran Mexico

Together with skyTran, Inc., we have made proposals for PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) routes in Cancun and Mexico City, and for the “Tren Maya”, the flagship project of the present Federal Government of Mexico. SkyTran´s PRT system has the potential to revolutionize urban development and real estate by providing elevated, high-speed, personal, point-to-point transit for urban and interurban routes. After its last investment round, skyTran is now primarily funded by Innovation Endeavors and Reliance (of India), and has postponed delivery of its commercial product until 2022 to focus on the high-end, high-performance segment of the PRT market expected to grow exponentially after 2021. Keystone will continue to represent skyTran in Mexico.

2020, Housing Factory

During 2020, Keystone will focus on its real estate supply chain integration platform as the new “center of gravity” for its urban development and transportation strategies.

KEYSTONE

INSIGHTS

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
  • THE FUTURE IS PROSPEROUS

  • HUMANS CAN BE A KEYSTONE SPECIES

  • EXPONENTIAL BUSINESSES

  • TECHNOLOGY CAN COEXIST WITH NATURE

  • DESIGN SYNERGIES

  • WE ARE IN A HURRY

  • NO ZERO SUM

  • DESIGN SYSTEMS BUT STOP ATTEMPTING TO MANAGE COMPLEX SYSTEMS

COMPLEXITY

The behavior of Complex Systems is difficult or even impossible to predict. This can be because the system is very sensitive to initial conditions, because the system itself changes and adapts, or because the behavior of the system cannot be described as the sum of the behaviors of its parts.

The Earth and Life are Complex Systems made up of a vast number of parts and elements that are interconnected in very complex ways. By comparison, a combat aircraft or even a space station are grossly simple and predictable. If almost any one of us were placed inside a combat airplane in flight and told to land it, the most likely outcome would be death. And the airplane is a simple system... Nobody in his/her right mind would dare play with the switches on the instrument panel of an airplane in mid flight without knowing exactly what effect that would have on the rest of the airplane's systems.

If an airplane is trivially simple when compared to Nature, it is naive and arrogant to think that we can manage our Ecosystem. Regardless of how much reductionist research is done, it is impossible to predict what will happen to an ecosystem when we introduce a genetically-modified organism or when we burn tons of fossil fuels.

We will design the Future by first ceasing to try to manage Complex Systems, and then by means of systemic interventions that respect and honor the nature and unpredictability of the global complex system.

SYSTEMS

A systemic approach takes into account the relationships among the parts of the system, between these and the system and between the system and its environment.

We don't solve problems but we redesign and intervene systems so that in the new systems the original problem becomes an opportunity. We don't believe in zero-sum and we believe that there is always a better alternative that aligns the stakeholders, always including Nature. Our skill is in finding these alternatives.

We believe that the pursuit of individual benefit is constructive when the whole system is taken into account, as well as the environmental and social costs. When we apply systems thinking, individual benefit aligns with collective benefit. When we apply reductionist thinking, individual benefit is opposed to the benefit of the system.

syn·er·gis·tic

/ˌsinərˈjistik/

adjective

  1. relating to the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.

"the synergistic interaction of mind and body"

SUSTAINABILITY

By abusing fossil fuels, exploiting and altering ecosystems, through a harmful chemistry and now also through genetic engineering, we are throwing out of balance the system that has supported life for nearly 4 billion years. The urgency of the situation is quite real. We have only one planet and we are ruining it rapidly. We are already witnessing the first symptoms of collapse in the form of climate change .

Humans lived for hundreds of thousands of years without destabilizing their ecosystem. In the last 10,000 years we began to have possible harmful effects on our environment, and only in the last 200 years have we had a very serious net negative impact. Access to ever-more powerful sources of energy has given us Humans the capacity to impact our environment to an unprecedented level. In the last decades we have come to believe that, as a species, we are capable of managing our environment. Yet, it is dangerously naive to think that we can manage a Complex System that has worked remarkably well for 4 billion years. We must stop trying to manage the global system and we must begin to intervene and redesign human systems so that they will adapt and conform to their environment.

This is the new challenge in the design of human systems and spaces.

SINGULARITY

Technology is evolving exponentially. In a couple of decades, it will be so fast that it look to us like instantaneous change. This will be the Singularity.

In less than 30 years we will have Artificial Intelligences that might surpass us in every function of the human mind. The world in 30 years will be totally different from the world today, and totally different from what we imagine.

In the next 5 years, we can and must make the decisions and take actions to prevent the environmental collapse of Earth and to shape the world in which we want to enter the Singularity.

This is the Future that we are designing.
